Bellingham, who has also attracted interest from the likes of Borussia Dortmund, has held talks with United and was recently invited on a tour of the club’s Carrington training ground, where he met legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Birmingham want upward of £35million for the promising midfielder, and he would be the highest-profile recruit of an operation to bring in some of the best talent around at the moment.

Sunderland’s 16-year-old striker Hugill is also reportedly set to sign, but he will go down the more traditional route of progressing through the ranks at Old Trafford.

United have agreed a £250,000 deal for Hugill, an old-fashioned style centre-forward seen as one who could develop and give United’s youth ranks a different dimension.
