After beating Treatment Center in a pool friendly game last week at Msangu in Salima, the Kamuzu road – based Mpumulo Pool Team on Sunday were humbled and humiliated by Beach House at Senga – bay beach house, in what could be described as a very tight, stiff and entertaining game.
The game which was played just few meters from the flows of Lake Malawi manage to attract high turnout of people to patronize the game and support their teams.
Both teams had a wonderful display but at the end of the tunnel the home side Beach House won 9 against four games by the visitors.
Addressing the media, Captain for Beach House, Flash Masese, said he is not carried away by the victory, saying the team aims to be the best in Salima and beyond as far as pool game is concerned in the country and this is just the beginning.
Masese then commended his team for fighting a good fight saying out-smarting Mpumulo is a pride, but not the end of their mission.
“We have dedicated ourselves to have a lot of games both home and away, because we can see that we do have the potential in the sport, so to us a win today it’s not just only a good news but also a motivation
“We will maintain our focus of being among the leading teams here in Salima but I should take this opportunity to ask some stakeholders who loves and have passion for this sport to help us and support pool game and possibly get recognition at district council” said Masese.
On his part Mpumulo captain Isaac Banda concurred with Masese that pool fraternity, sports administers and stakeholders should join hands in taking this minority sport to higher level in the lake shore district whereby all people will play the game and also keep the youths busy other than involving themselves in immoral behavior.
He said: “Talking about the game, yes we have lost but we tried congratulations to Beach House for proving to us that they want it more than us, we didn’t play better in this game but we will go back to our drawing board to see where we missed it, so that we can be ready for our next game”
Pool game is one of the minority sports in the country which normally entertains people mostly especially in chilling spots.
However the sport face constraints to grow such as lack of support and recognition from various sports bodies in the country, which has been a major set-back for the past years.
Meanwhile Treatment Pool Club advisor Peter ‘pepe’ Nyalugwe fault lack of well organized committee to govern and administer the sport in the district.
“I would like to urge pool game lovers in Salima to come up with tangible strategies on how we can develop and advance the sport in the district
“My plea is to the corporate world and businesspersons out there not to be selective but invest in all type of sports. In other countries we have seen perceived minority sports generating income for all stakeholders “he said.
Salima- based pool teams have been struggling to find stable sponsorship for such a long time, with notable teams active playing the sport include Treatment Pool Club, Malila, Casanova, Njanje Hide Out, Pentagon, Beach House, Mwamonje, Pilira, Kaphatenga, Mphumulo and Siyasiya just to mention a few.
