Police in Phalombe are keeping in custody a 23 year-old-man, Maxwell Galimoto for allegedly defiling a year-old-baby.
According to Phalombe Deputy Public Relations Officer Jimmy Kapanja, the incident occurred on January 27, 2020 around 23:00 hours at Mwaapa Village,Traditional Authority Kaduya in the district.
He said on the night of the incident , the mother to the victim was in the kitchen preparing dinner.
“At that time, she left the baby lying on the bed inside in her bedroom. Whilst there, the suspect took advantage and went into the house. He then took the baby into the nearby maize field, and defiled her. Kapanja further said, after the ordeal, the suspect dropped the baby girl at the house of her grandmother and he escaped.
When the mother of the baby went into the house to check on her baby, she was surprised to see that her baby was not there. That prompted her to inform her mother (granny to the victim) and together, they conducted search until 23:00 hours, but to no avail. Later, they both went to sleep.
Around 00:30 hours, the granny went outside her house to answer call of nature, but she was shocked to see the baby lying in her house’ drainage. She therefore called the mother of the victim and others to witness the matter. To their surprise, they saw blood oozing from the baby’s private parts.
They reported the matter at Migowi Police Unit where medical report form was issued for medical examination and treatment.
Medical personnel at the health facility found that the baby was defiled.
The victim was later referred to Holy Family Mission Hospital where she was admitted, and discharged the next day.
On the wee hours of January 28, 2020, the suspect was arrested by Migowi Police officers at Thondolo Village where he was hiding.
The suspect will appear in court of law soon to answer the charge of defilement contravening Section 138(1) of the Penal Code.
Maxwell Galimoto, 28, hails from Mwaapa Village, Traditional Authority Kaduya in Phalombe district.
