Mobile sensitisation awareness campaigns which Ntcheu Police has revealed that four criminal cases in the area Traditional Authority (TA) Phambala in the district were registered.
According to Ntcheu Police Community Policing Coordinator, Inspector William Bunya, the Station received 65 tips on child marriages and pregnancies in the area.
He said the aim of the week long campaign was to sensitize the community to know how and where to report child pregnancies and marriages.
“Ntcheu District with resources from World Vision Malawi (WVM) followed up 65 cases where it was discovered that four were criminal in nature as they involved girls under the age of 16,” Bunya said adding that five girls were further withdrawn from marriages.
He observed that there was a big possibility of more criminal cases in the area as they did not manage to follow up 16 cases out of the 65.
Ntcheu District Director of Education, Youth and Sports, Lucia Chidalengwa said the District Directorate of Education would sensitize communities on re-admission policy so that the pregnant girls return to school after delivering.
She highlighted that Primary Education Advisors (PEAs) and Head teachers would be making individual follow-ups on the girls.
On child marriages, Chidalengwa said the district is to engage with Chiefs to end such marriages.
