Lilongwe City Council (LCC) has urged business operators in Lilongwe City markets to embrace proper waste management when they are doing their businesses as one way of keeping the markets clean.
Speaking on Friday in Lilongwe during Proper Waste Management Workshop for market leaders which was organized by LCC, Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) and Tilitonse Foundation, LCC Chief Commercial Manager, Tapiwa Mkandawire said that business operators have big role to play in maintaining the cleanliness of the markets.
“It is the markets that generate a lot of waste, in this regard business operators themselves in the markets have the great responsibility in making sure that the markets are clean by among other things observing proper waste management,” she said.
Mkandawire said that LCC and its partners organized the workshop in order to empower market leaders with knowledge concerning proper waste management so that they should share what they have learnt to fellow business operator in their markets.
“Our stakeholders in the markets are business operators. We decided to organize the workshop in order to bring awareness to these market leaders on how they can effectively manage the waste in their respective markets.
“We want these market leaders to share the knowledge they have leant to fellow business operators so that they should be able to handle the waste properly and do their businesses in the places that are clean for them,” she said.
Mkandawire said that LCC would maintain availability of waste management equipment such as waste bins in all markets in the city in bid for business operators to be easily managing their waste.
“As council will be making sure that all the time markets have waste management equipment such as bins so that business operators can easily manage their waste properly and keep their business premises clean,” she added.
Lilongwe Vendors Association Director, Davie Kaponda hailed LCC and its partners for equipping market leaders with knowledge concerning proper waste management saying that this would assist to promote hygiene in Lilongwe City Markets.
“The knowledge regarding waste management which we have gained has come at a right time and this will help us to manage our waste properly hence this would help to uphold hygiene in our markets,” he stated.
The workshop attracted market leaders from various markets in Lilongwe city which include; Area 23, Ngwenya, Lizulu and Bwandilo just to mention some.
