Govt. donates maize flour to elderly, persons with disability

By Kondwani Magombo -Mana.

Government said it is committed to providing socio-economic support to persons with disability and the elderly to mitigate the impact of the economic slowdown caused by COVID-19.

Minister of Persons with Disability and the elderly, Dr. Clement Chiwaya, made the commitment Thursday when he donated 31 metric tons of maize flour to over 150 persons with disability and the elderly in Mangochi.

Chiwaya said government had sourced the maize flour from a charity organization, Muslim World League, and that the donation would be distributed to persons with disability and the elderly across the country.

“Government realizes that most of the persons with disability and the elderly get their support from people who are employed or doing business,” said the minister.

He continued: “But with this COVID-19 many businesses are not doing well, hence the need for such support.”

The minister thanked the Muslim World League for the support appealing to other local and international organizations to emulate the gesture and support people who are less privileged and vulnerable in the country.

Muslim World League Social Welfare Manager, Ahmed Diab said his organization would continue to support vulnerable Malawians by providing them with social needs such as food, clean potable water and education.

He described the relationship between the Muslim World League and the Malawi government as solid and that the organization would always be there to offer support to vulnerable people.

“The elderly and people with disability are more deserving than the rest when it comes to times like these,” explained Diab, adding: “Therefore, it pleased the Muslim World League to respond to Malawi government’s appeal for support of the elderly and persons with disability.”

According to Diab, his organization has procured 30,000 bags of maize flour worth K200Million to be distributed across the country.
